Events and installations
Creating opportunities with Disney IP has been a staple since the Walt days. It is no different today with the vast IP portfolio that Disney owns.
As part of synergy efforts to develop cross-platforms promotional opportunities, Disney Studios partnered with WDI to create special Sneak Peek events which would run in advance of new films' world premieres. For each new film, Disneyland receives a long format, custom edit trailer that receives a 4D theater treatment with special effects only Imagineers can create, immersing Guests into the film experience.
Each film provides a new opportunity to create a fresh exterior branded experience, celebrating each unique film. These include complex marquees, multiple poster designs, operational signage, sculpted 3D characters, props, landscaping, and lighting that all needed to be installed prior to opening… and removed as if they were never there. This effort was always fast-paced as studio assets were typically not ready until the films’ release.
As the Principal Graphic Designer at the Resort, it was my responsibility to oversee each one of these events for the graphics exterior scope. I set the scope and standard for the first one, Tron Legacy. From there, each graphic designer on my team took turns developing the designs as these were very fast-paced efforts. I directed other designers on the process and communication to work with each film studio to execute these events.
This process of design, supervision, communication and shared participation made each designer better at communication and supporting our studio partners.
