Alien Pizza Planet is the result of a test done for the Pixar Fest celebration. Our local WDI team of art directors, graphic designers and lighting designers partnered with Pixar’s Roger Gould and team to develop the concept further. By working back and forth weekly with Pixar, we were able to not only meet their expectations but surpass them. The ultimate concept was based on the world of Toy Story so the scale, proportions and even placement needed to reflect that. The sign face is a multi-level vacuum formed panel with a 12” deep cabinet and soft edges like a toy.
As the creative leader of the graphics team, it is one of my joys to develop design solutions by way of mentoring junior designers through every step of the process. I mentored Stacy Coleman through the Alien Pizza Planet marquee and photo opportunity project, which involved daily check-ins for direction and sketch sessions to develop the design. As the Principal, I developed the design to keep focus on guest experience of the Pixar brand, produce the technical contract documents, and ultimately provide close direction during fabrication supervision and art direction.
